Rebuilding Barnacle Bill's — restoring a Jersey Shore landmark

Anyone who's been down the shore knows the Barnacle Bill's face. Rebuilding it after Sandy was a commercial design-build project we took as personally as any custom home.

We’ve been hard at work putting Barnacle Bill’s Amusements in Ortley Beach back together after Hurricane Sandy left it in disarray. The job: design and build an entirely new restaurant, mini-golf course, and arcade for one of the most recognizable legacy businesses on the Jersey Shore.

Anyone who’s been down the shore knows the Barnacle Bill’s face. We took the project seriously for that reason — the goal was to make the entire site better without losing any of the original shore charm that made it a landmark in the first place.

The Ortley Beach site mid-reconstruction. The famous classic arcade games had been thrown to the curb after Sandy — we were rebuilding the whole property from there.

After the storm, the building was gutted, the famous classic arcade machines had been thrown out to the curb, and the site needed a full programming and design rethink before any framing began. As a design + build firm, we were able to handle every part of that — site planning, the new restaurant building, the custom-designed mini-golf course, and a refurbished arcade room with a mix of new and restored games — all under one team.

The new restaurant going up. Brand-new build, designed to read as an evolution of the original — not a replacement.

The new Barnacle Bill’s came back better than ever — a brand-new restaurant, a beautifully redesigned mini-golf course, and the arcade reopened with a curated mix of classic and new machines. It’s a good example of why the design + build model works particularly well on commercial restoration projects: when one team owns the design intent and the construction sequencing, you don’t lose time to handoffs, and you don’t lose details to the spaces between firms.

Whether it’s an Ortley Beach landmark or a custom waterfront home, the same operating principle applies: one team, one set of plans, one schedule, one accountable point of contact. If you have a Jersey Shore commercial or residential project that needs both design and construction handled together, we’d be happy to talk.
